As promised, we have started working on the Polka City game and we already have something for you to look at. We have attacked the game design from all angles including 3D modeling, city planning, and AI development.
The first iteration of the road network is generated
We laid out a basic road network earlier primarily to figure out the scaling of the terrain and usable area on the map. We have laid our road network in a cleaner way, which gives us better flexibility to manage dead-ends and edge cases. In addition, roadside assets like streetlamps, pavement, etc. will also be generated at this juncture.
Testing with real 3D buildings in our prefabs
As you can see in the screenshots, we prepared a few prefabs with 3D building assets. They work fine with our procedural system, and we are currently working on optimizing them. The biggest problem is the scale and we are currently sizing the buildings to be much smaller than they are to have them fit with the Polkacity car models such as the Bugatti.
- Redesign of quadrant prefabs to match the real-world scale
We’re going to redesign the quadrants to incorporate more filler buildings and assets around the supposed NFTs in a quadrant. - UI work
On the UI side, we developed a palette and has started to work on the wireframes to make them UI-ready. - Procedural Generation System
We have a finished procedural system working and giving seed-based acceptable results with city blocks spawning according to our rules. What you see on the screenshot below is automatically generated and follows the rules we’ve put in place. - Quadrant prefabs
We have added basic polygons to represent buildings in our prefabs. We will add the 3D assets to the prefabs and test them. - UX Wireframing
We have been working on the wireframes in parallel to the work we have been doing to develop the prefabs to use in procedural generation. A UI designer will also be joining the team from next week; she will do all the styling, then start UI work on the screens. - 3D Assets
We’ve pretty much finalized the assets we want to work with, but some of them are still too high in quality and the effort to optimize them could take days, so we’re expanding our search and trying to find simpler models to work with. We’ll finalize these as soon as possible after discussing them with our 3D modeler.
